Cream teas, flowers and a lockdown 80th birthday

This weekend saw its first lockdown Mother’s Day in the UK since the pandemic started last year and sadly, many families were unable to celebrate with their loved ones. However, our Ross Good Neighbours’ buddies brought some cheer and a lot of smiles to their neighbourhood friends, taking time out on Saturday and Sunday mornings to deliver around 30 delicious afternoon cream teas donated to them by The Property Hub.

Kate May and Karren Simpson from The Property Hub, located in Gloucester Road, Ross-on-Wye, were so touched by the work that the Ross Community Development Trust have been doing over the last year through their Ross Good Neighbours scheme, that they wanted to say a huge ‘thank you’ to them all and treat the buddies and their customers to an afternoon cream tea, lovingly assembled into little hampers by Gay Goodwin from The Rumbling Tum.

Kate, co-owner of The Property Hub, commented: ”We have been really touched by the community spirit in Ross, particularly during this last year. The pandemic has brought so much pain and sadness to a lot of people – we’re very aware that separation brings with it so much loneliness. Many families have been unable to hug each other and being a relatively new grandmother, there were times I really missed my daughter and grandson who live in Wales.”. Karren added, “Our thoughts went out to those who were isolating and we were really keen to do something to make them smile and let them know that we were thinking of them. We also wanted to thank the amazing neighbourhood buddies who spend time looking after them, helping them with shopping and other chores.”

Kate and Karren also treated the buddies to a lovely selection of gifts whilst supporting local businesses. In total, there were 5 buddies’ afternoon cream teas plus gifts including wine & flowers from Morrison’s and treatment vouchers courtesy of local beauty salon The Beauty Bar in Hill Street.

One special customer, Michael Field, received his lovely surprise on his doorstep with wife Patricia whilst celebrating his 80th birthday in isolation. He was over the moon and was so delighted to receive his gift: “It has really made my day and my neighbourhood friend, Gen and her family even made me an 80th banner and cards – I’m thrilled!” he said.

The Ross Good Neighbours would love to hear from you if you are either isolating and need assistance, or if you would like to join the team of neighbourhood buddies. Call our Helpline on 01989 313002 or email help@rosscdt.org.uk.
