Christmas countdown #9 – shop local to save our stores

Herefordshire boasts some of the most amazing countryside views in the UK and is renowned for its incredible local produce, however this year’s coronavirus pandemic has hit local suppliers hard and many will not survive the fallout of lockdown.

Now that the shops have reopened, we must all do our best to keep our high streets alive – including more remote producers’ businesses – so it is really important that we all shop local as much as possible in the run up to Christmas.

The WISH website is an excellent resource for local directories and information about businesses providing home deliveries and other services throughout the coming weeks. Their Ross-on-Wye directory has a comprehensive list of local businesses and organisations offering doorstep deliveries plus supermarket opening times for NHS, key workers and the elderly as well as a list of pharmacies and household information such as green waste disposal.

Herefordshire Council is supporting local businesses throughout the county by offering a day of free car parking in five locations, including Ross-on-Wye on Saturday 19 December.

If you, or someone you know, needs to isolate or would benefit from support with shopping or pet care for example, please give the Ross Good Neighbours’ Helpline a call on 01989 313002 or email help@rosscdt.org.uk and one of our friendly volunteers will be happy to help.
